A lot of musicians simply don’t want the kind of dance club, electronic drums sounds that most drumming apps have to offer, but hey – the whole app medium does seem to encourage techno music more than anything, so they’re hard to avoid. The answer might DrumJam, an app aimed at primarily percussion samples, but with a heap of real drums as well. The app is designed by award-winning international percussionist Pete Lockett and Sonosaurus LLC, the developer of ThumbJam. Pete has been around for decades and performed with the likes of Peter Gabriel and Björk to Robert Plant, Dido, Jeff Beck and more – not a dance floor in sight there, right? He has also worked extensively in the film industry, arranging and recording all the ethnic percussion for five Bond 007 films. DrumJam is Lockett’s personal rhythm factory with all the individual percussion parts recorded by Pete. You can build layers from a wide range of authentic ethnic percussion and drum kit loops and jam away over the top of the grooves you create. With intuitive quantized beats performed by simply dragging your fingers around, it is possible for even the absolute novice to get some grooves immediately – check out the cool videos of Pete doing his thing on the website. If you want to get more serious about a song arrangement DrumJam allows you to Export the loops as wave files into your DAW of choice. That’s not much different to how you’d work with software like BFD2 (FXpansion) or Abbey Road Drums (Native Instruments) in a full desktop DAW. Filters and effects give you plenty of sonic possibilities. And DrumJam is Audiobus-compatible.
